Grade 5 is a wonderful year!   We continue to build on the foundation from prior grades and add new skills and strategies.

Fifth grade has three critical learning areas: 

1.  Fractions:  We will continue to build on the addition and subtraction work from grades three and four.  We also develop an understanding of the meaning of multiplying and dividing with fractions.  No "invert and multiply" for us!! We do want to "reason why!"  

​

2.  Operations with numbers:  We will work on division, and firm up our fluency for addition, subtraction multiplcation as well. Our computation skills will extend to work with decimals.  

 

3.  Volume:  We work on understanding the volume concept, beyond the formula.  We'll be working with both regular prisms and irregular shapes.
