Unit 5 extends students' understanding of division to include work with decimal numbers. We encourage all students to learn and use the long division algorithm (called digit by digit in our math book) as it will be the easiest one to use when working with decimal numbers. What about the remainder?
In 4th grade we just left the remainder and thought about what it would mean in terms of the answer to a story problem. This year, like we learned to divide up the remainder using fractions, we will learn that we can use decimals to continue dividing the remainder! Cool!
