Mathematical Reasoning

Elementary teachers spent our day yesterday thinking about mathematical reasoning and its development at the elementary level. You can support mathematical reasoning at home by asking simple questions such as "Why does that work?" "Do you think that strategy would work for any numbers?" At many grade levels students are encouraged to use a variety of computational strategies. Doing this work deepens our understanding of the operations and prepares students to work with more advanced ideas later on. Don't be afraid to try some of these "newer" strategies yourself. Can you figure out why they work? Promote curiosity and have some fun with math!
