Authentic Problem Solving

The elementary math specialists had a wonderful day of PD on Friday. Along with the middle school math teachers, we spend the day with Mike Flynn, former Massachusetts teacher of the year and current director of the Mathematics Leadership Program at Mount Holyoke College. We dove into authentic problem solving tasks and looked at ways we can enhance problem solving in the classroom. Mr. Flynn reminds us that math is everywhere, and we can routinely tap into our children and students' natural curiosity and find challenges everywhere! How many people do you think are waiting in this line? How many steps are in this tower? How many miles til we get to Boston? The possibilities are endless if you know where to look!
